Frequently Asked Questions

Alzheimer’s disease is a complex, multi-factorial disease. There are many factors that can contribute to the disease and the exact cause of Alzheimer’s is not known. But there is growing evidence that multiple factors may contribute to memory and executive function loss in different ways. To identify therapeutic recommendations that are best for you our healthcare providers will look at key medical history information including:

  • Blood pressure
  • Body mass index
  • Diet
  • Meal timing
  • Alcohol use
  • Physical activity
  • Cardiovascular
  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Sleep Quality
  • Sleep Quantity
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Hearing Loss
  • Smoking
  • Social stimulation
  • Subjective stress levels
  • Neuroplasticity opportunities
  • Evaluation of current medications
  • Evaluation of personal medical history

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test or MoCA is a nationally-recognized, clinical screening instrument used to assess mild cognitive dysfunction. It looks at such things as attention and concentration, executive functions, memory, language, visual construction skills, conceptual thinking, calculations, and orientation. The test measures cognitive impairment in major cognitive domains, and is sensitive in detecting early stages of impairment for the most common neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. For more information on the MoCA test please visit http://www.mocatest.org

Variations in the types of genes we carry can influence our health. The ADx Risk & Wellness Test looks at two very important genes, ApoE and MTHFR.

The ApoE gene is the single-most dominant gene for assessing Alzheimer’s disease risk, accounting for nearly 50% of overall genetic risk. This gene has many functions including transport of cholesterol, and having the ApoE4 allele can increase your risk for other health conditions such as atherosclerosis and stroke. In the case of Alzheimer’s disease, having a high-risk ApoE4 allele does not mean you will definitely develop Alzheimer’s but having it does increase your genetic risk.

Genetic variations of MTHFR have been correlated with risk for Alzheimer’s disease and understanding this genetic variant may open up novel possibilities for disease risk reduction and related wellness. Your MTHFR  gene produces an enzyme that processes folate and regulates homocysteine levels. Closely controlling folate and homocysteine levels may lead to optimal memory function in both MCI and Alzheimer’s cases.

The ADx blood panel analyzes 14 blood analytes (15 for men) most indicative of health risks associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Our measured analytes include:
  • Complete Blood Count
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
  • Lipid Panel with Ratios
  • Cortisol levels
  • Insulin resistance including
  • Fasting glucose
  • Fasting insulin
  • HOMA-Insulin Resistance (IR) Score
  • Hemoglobin A1c (HgA1c)
  • Homocysteine levels
  • Inflammation (high sensitivity-CRP)
  • Vitamin & mineral levels including
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin B12
  • Folate
  • Magnesium
  • Thyroid levels
  • Testosterone levels (men only)

Patients who may benefit the most from the ADx tests include those seeking early cognitive healthcare intervention, especially healthy individuals seeking to reduce their risk and those showing early signs of memory loss or mild cognitive impairment. ADx products are not recommended for patients experiencing moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease or for patients scoring a 17 or below on the MoCA test.

Because there are many types of dementia it is possible that the ADx Alzheimer’s-specific products may not address your cognitive loss symptoms.

Our tests are not diagnostic, meaning the results will not tell you if you have Alzheimer’s disease. They are for use in determining disease risk and cognitive well-being and for identifying preventive or disease slowing therapies. There currently is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

Most of the test results for the Risk & Wellness Test are received within 2-3 days of testing. Genetic testing can take 2-4 weeks depending on laboratory work flow. Typically, you will receive your results in about 3 weeks after they are ordered. Once your results are in, your care coordinator will schedule an appointment with our physician based on your availability and the doctor’s patient schedule. Typically, our doctors will visit with you within a week of scheduling an appointment.

Currently our tests & services are not covered by insurance or Medicare, and Medicare enrollees will need to sign an advanced bulletin notice or ABN that confirms the tests are not covered and the enrollee will not submit a claim to Medicare.

Payment plans are available to patients as needed. Please discuss this with an ADx customer service representative.

Through a thorough medical history interview and laboratory testing our team can identify the multiple factors that can impact your cognitive health, including:
